All About Barcode (Bar Code) Scanners and Readers

Barcode scanners are used in various applications to eliminate typing errors. Instead of typing a product code, such as 9312311165011, as long as that code is represented in a barcode, the barcode can be read using a scanner and 9312311165011 will appear at the cursor-point in the computer application just as if the operator had typed 9312311165011 on the computer's keyboard - i.e., a scanner replaces keyboard data entry. The scanner transmits the data string, i.e. 9312311165011 ... it does not know that the actual product is an A6-size Marbig-brand spiral-bound notebook that retails for about $1.99 ... for that you will need a Point of Sale software package such as MYOB Retail Manager - 9312311165011 is just the record key to the record in your database that contains the other information about the item - such as description, price and supplier!

Wired Scanners
These devices are directly connected to a host computer using a cable (that is about 1.8 metres in length) and interface to the computer by either a PS2 Keyboard Wedge cable, a serial cable, or, more commonly these days, a USB cable.
  • PS2 Keyboard Wedge
50ft PS/2 M/F KEYBOARD/MOUSE EXTENSION CABLEIf the computer has a keyboard that is connected to a round PS2 type connection, then the scanner can be plugged into that connection and the keyboard is then connected to the same cable (i.e. the scanner cable is a "Y" cable to enable the scanner and the keyboard to be connected to a single PS2 connector on the host computer). For more information about scanner-to-computer interface types, click here
    - opens in new window.

  • USB
These scanners are "plug and play" - just plug the scanner into a spare USB port. The scanner will self install, and will work instantly. Anything scanned by the scanner will be "entered" into your application just as if you had typed it on a keyboard (but without the "typos"). For more information about scanner-to-computer interface types, click here - opens in new window.
  • Serial
These use an RS232 9-pin serial port (that usually requires an external power supply to power the scanner)). These scanners require you to set up a  communications protocol on the computer that is precisely matched to the serial communication settings on the scanner. Serial scanners are often used on testing and measuring equipment and cash registers. Serial scanners are usually not used with text based computer applications as such applications usually expect "keyboard-entered" data. Bluetooth (Cordless) Scanners
These devices are not restricted by cable length and communicate using an in-built Bluetooth radio to a Bluetooth device in the device that you wish to use the scanner with. NOTE: The device you are using the scanner with must have its own Bluetooth receiver. Also, any "base stations" shown for any of these scanners are solely to re-charge the battery in the scanner - they are not Bluetooth receivers and are generally not connected to your computer, but are connected to a 240 volt power source.

Cordless Scanners
These devices are not restricted by cable length and communicate by radio to a base station that is directly connected to a computer using either a PS2 Keyboard Wedge or a USB port on the computer. Depending on the radio technology used, cordless scanners can have a radial range of up to 100 meters, though generally the radial range is 10 metres from the computer to which the base station is connected. NOTE: The scanner is used in real time with the host computer, so, as an operator you need to be very confident as to what is actually happening on the host computer when you scan a barcode, especially if you are not able to see the screen of the host computer. The scanner itself is just a "keyboard-entry device". When assessing whether or not a cordless scanner would be suitable for your requirement, just imagine using your computer keyboard, but at a distance of 10 metres from your computer. Perhaps you actually need a data collector? Click here for details about batch (i.e. unwired) data collectors. Or, if you want to have real-time connection to a computer application, and also have a sub-set of that application running in the remote scanner, you will need a Mobile Computer. Click here for details about wireless mobile computers.

Scale Scanners
These devices are weighing scales that have an omni-directional scanner built into the scale's platform

Prices quoted on the Barcoder web site exclude GST and (unless otherwise stated) do not include handling and delivery charges and are subject to change without prior notice if our suppliers have changed their prices since we last updated a particular product's listing on this web site. If you are ordering more than one of the same product, and the item is NOT on Monthly Special or Super Special, you can claim extra discount. Click here to see Barcoder's BULK DISCOUNT POLICY. When comparing our prices to other suppliers please take into account the total price including shipping from us and the other supplier. Remember, if our total cost to you is higher than another supplier, we will do our best to better the other supplier's total price including shipping. With our Australia wide volume purchasing power we should be able to better any pricing from any Australian based retail competitor.

Orders are processed centrally at our Head Office in Sydney. Goods will be shipped from the warehouse that is nearest to you that has the stock that you have ordered. Warehouses are in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. All orders must be in writing and can not be accepted by telephone. Orders can be emailed to orders AT barcoder.com.au  (click on either of the underlined parts of the email address on the left, the displayed email address has been modified to prevent email harvesting by SPAMMERS) or faxed to 1300 855 827. You can attach formal Purchase Orders to your email if that is your organisation's ordering practice. All orders must contain the name, phone number and email address of the person who will receive the goods (we must have the email address so we can email a copy of our Tax Invoice to you prior to shipment so that you can double check your order), the name and ABN of the organisation ordering the goods (orders will NOT be shipped on credit unless a valid ABN is quoted), and a street address (with Post Code) for delivery (our couriers can not deliver to Post Office boxes). Thirty-day accounts can be opened for clients who will be making regular purchases and will be spending in excess of $5,000 with Barcoder annually. Orders placed with and accepted by Barcoder are accepted strictly subject to the Terms and Conditions which can be found at Barcoder-Terms-and-Conditions-of-Sale.htm and the placing of such orders shall be conclusive proof of the fact that the Purchaser has read, understands and agrees to such Terms and Condition of Sale.

Shipping costs are simple. If your order is processed before 2:00PM (Sydney/Melbourne time) and the items are in stock in either our Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney or Perth fulfilment warehouses, your goods will be shipped that afternoon to any location in Australia. Shipping charges are simple: if the items will fit in a 3Kg Air Satchel, they will be shipped to anywhere in Australia for $16.50 including GST (5Kg Air Satchels are $23.10 including GST). Items that will not fit in an Air Satchel will be shipped to anywhere in Australia by Road Express for $38.50 including GST for packages up to approximately 25Kg ... so, order in bulk to take advantage of that flat-rate Australia-wide shipping cost. Freight charges for very bulky or extra heavy orders or to remote delivery points will be shipped at cost, plus a small packing and shipping charge.

Payment can be made by Credit Card (Visa or MasterCard) or Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). There is a 2% surcharge on all payments made by Credit Card (we just can not absorb Merchant Fees and maintain our extremely low discounted prices ... if you are happy to pay the full Suggested Retail Price, we are happy to not charge you the 2% fee and we will even ship your goods to you free of charge). If you are paying by Credit Card, please phone us with your credit card details. Payment can also be made, within 7 days from the invoice date, by EFT direct to Barcoder (our bank details will be printed on the invoice that will be emailed to you prior to shipment). NOTE: orders will NOT be shipped on 7-day payment terms unless a valid ABN is quoted at the time of order. If you have not quoted your ABN, payment must be made by Credit Card or EFT prior to us shipping your items.

Contacting Barcoder is convenient for you. You can contact us by phoning the State Metropolitan, Regional or Rural local phone number of the location that is nearest to you or by emailing us. For our full phone contact details, plus our principal email addresses, please click here.
